INTERVIEW WITH PRODUCER JIM DIAMOND

Jim Diamond: Owner and Producer, Ghetto Recorders, Detroit. Recorded more ridiculously awesome albums than you'll ever believe. For reals.

Who are you wearing?

I'm in a rust terrycloth bathrobe.

Motown, Stax or Sun?

I have my 'pop' streak so I have to say Motown, plus I have to root for the home team.

What would make you kick someone out of your studio?

Heroin.

Best meal with chicken?

Chicken with minestra, made by my grandmother. It's a Greek thing.

You've recorded so many albums and bands...do you sometimes just make some up to see if people are paying attention?

I have never done that but that's a good idea.

Best Montreal band you've recorded?

Los Sexareenos.

Do you think some babies are ugly?

I don't think I really have an opinion about babies' looks. They're all kind of the same to me.

What band would you record for free?

Umm, my own?

If you were forced to leave Detroit, where would you go?

NYC or New Orleans or Montreal or Madrid.

If you started a record label, what would it be called?

I tried to start a label about ten years ago. It was called 'Jim Diamond Records' but the backers lost distribution and money and it all went to hell. We even had a great band signed and ready to go.

Are you a diamond in the rough?

Definitely.
