Rough Trade opening a flagship US store in New York November 25th

From Billboard:

Rough Trade, the iconic London music retailer that spawned Rough Trade Records and served as a cradle for post-punk music in the late 1970s, will open its first flagship store in the U.S. in New York on Monday, November 25.

The store, a 15,000 square foot repurposed film prop warehouse in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, represents a major gamble on the American music market by the retailer, which in recent years has enjoyed a sales boom in the U.K. despite harsh industry realities in that country and around the word. In April, the British trade magazine Music Week named Rough Trade “Retail Brand of the Year.”

“New York and London are similar in many ways -- they're kaleidoscopic celebrations of global differences and similarities,” Rough Trade co-president Stephen Godfroy tells Billboard of expanding across the Atlantic. “They enjoy an open-mindedness, a deep respect for the past, a voracious appetite for the future, which all combines to produce a climate that suits our individual approach to music retail.”

The Williamsburg store was originally announced in April of 2012, with plans to open its doors at an unspecified date later that year. But what Godfroy describes as “numerous obstacles in the construction planning and building process” left those plans in limbo until now.

Rough Trade N.Y.C. will sell all new music -- no used -- in multiple formats in addition to serving as a “healthy-sized place to hang out” for music lovers. A portion of the space has been sectioned off as a performance venue for free in-stores as well as after-hours ticketed concerts booked by The Bowery Presents.

The store will join other live music venues in perpetually developing North Williamsburg, including Bowery’s Brooklyn Bowl, Output and the Williamsburg Waterfront and Williamsburg Park.
“The emphasis will be on music the art, not the commodity,” says Godfroy. “In that respect, it will be true to our London stores, places where music and culture lovers of all ages and taste congregate and celebrate what it means to be independent.”

Physical music retailers in the U.S. have endured a bitter decline in sales as consumers have shifted to digital consumption methods. In the past five years, sales at independent music retailers have fallen 36.1%, according to Nielsen SoundScan, while chain stores and mass merchant retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy saw even bigger dips of 71.6% and 51.7% over the same period, respectively. In New York just this year, independent retailers Bleecker Bob’s and Sound Fix records closed their doors due to intractable profit margins.

There are signs that physical formats aren’t dead yet, however. Vinyl sales are so far up a whopping 31.9% just this year, according to SoundScan, continuing a hockey-stick growth phase for the format that dates back to the first Record Store Day in 2008.

In London, Rough Trade Retail Group, which operates independently from Rough Trade Records, has two stores, Rough Trade West and Rough Trade East. The latter, opened in 2007, is the larger of the two, but at 5,000 square feet is only one third the size of the New York store.

“This city demands something truly special, and hopefully that's what we can achieve in collaboration with the people that visit and go on to define the space over the months and years to come,” says Godfroy. “[The store is] a way of saying ‘thank you’ for the joy and inspiration NYC has given us with its music and culture.”

Cosmic Psychos: Blokes You Can Trust

Australian Punk Legend's The Cosmic Psychos are touring the US this September (ending their tour at the amazing Goner Fest). They will be bringing their rock n roll and along with their brand new documentary, ''Blokes You Can Trust''.

Check out the documentary description here:

For 30 years, the Cosmic Psychos have blazed a trail of empty beer cans and busted ear drums around the globe with their quintessential Australian drawl and pounding punk rock songs.

With the founding member Ross Knight finding inspiration from the Bulldozer he drove on the family farm in country Victoria, the band forged a unique sound and image that resonated with punk rock fans everywhere.

Iconic label Sup Pop! released their second album when the band fell into the ‘Seattle’ scene of the late 80’s amidst the likes of Pearl Jam, Mudhoney and The Melvins.

Never quite finding the mainstream success of their grunge counterparts, the band managed to tour heavily in the USA and Europe thanks to a large and devoted fan base. The Cosmic Psychos were notorious for their ability to drink pubs dry, earning them a reputation that resonated around as a warning - “Never drink with the ‘Psychos”.

But it wasn’t all shits and giggles. A heavy falling out with drummer and founding member Bill Walsh resulted in a line-up change and a bitter dedication on their new album with the song ‘Kill Bill’. They’ve been ripped off by several record labels, and dealt with the tragedy of the passing of guitarist Robbie Watts in 2006. But the band continues through all its adversity to remain strong to this day with Dean Muller on drums and John ‘Mad Macca’ McKeering from the Onya’s taking care of the guitar duties.

COSMIC PSYCHOS : BLOKES YOU CAN TRUST follows the bands colourful history, as well as the enigmatic and entertaining founding member Ross Knight, to get behind the man who rides the bulldozer. Farmer, Father, Weightlifter, and frontman. His story alone, and told from his perspective is a unique portrait of an unlikely and revered rock and roll bloke.

And give them a listen here:

Soul Queen Barbara Lynn plays Brooklyn's Littlefield Saturday October 12th

Get tickets HERE!

Barbara Lynn (backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band)

From Dig Deeper:
Dig Deeper is honored to present our friend Barbara Lynn, the Soul Queen of the Gulf Coast, in a rare NYC performance backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band.

Although it was her 1962 #1 hit single "You'll Lose a Good Thing" that brought her to the world's attention, today Barbara Lynn is perhaps better known for "I'm a Good Woman" which with its powerfully sassy lyrics and driving beat has made it a longtime favorite amongst soul and funk DJs as a surefire dancefloor filler – plus, its getting sampled by everyone from Moby to Lil' Wayne hasn't hurt either.

Still a resident of Beaumont, Texas, where she was born, Barbara Lynn is a commanding vocalist who – unusual for the 1960s – wrote many of her own songs, and led her band on guitar – left-handed guitar at that.

Those who were lucky enough to score a ticket to the sold-out 2009 Brooklyn Soul Festival which we put on with our friend Eli "Paperboy" Reed know how devastatingly electric her live shows can be.

Special guest DJ John Manship ( - one of the world's foremost dealers in rare soul records since 1969 is traveling in from the UK to join residents DJ Honky and Mr. Robinson spinning all original soul and funk 45s for the dancefloor. The Brooklyn Rhythm Band will be opening the show with their own set of soul classics!

Good Ol' Freda

Good Ol' Freda, a new documentary about Freda Kelly, who served as The Beatles' secretary for 11 years, screens all over the country starting today, and is also available on iTunes starting today.

Screening dates below.

Watch the official trailer here:

From the film's website:
Freda Kelly was just a shy Liverpudlian teenager when she was asked to work for a local band hoping to make it big. Though she had no concept of how far they would go, Freda had faith in The Beatles from the beginning, and The Beatles had faith in her.
History notes that The Beatles were together for 10 years, but Freda worked for them for 11. Many people came in and out of the band's circle as they grew to international stardom, but Freda remained a staple because of her unfaltering loyalty and dedication. As the Beatles' devoted secretary and friend, Freda was there as history unfolded; she was witness to the evolution – advances and setbacks, breakthroughs and challenges – of the greatest band in history.
In Good Ol' Freda, Freda tells her stories for the first time in 50 years. One of few documentaries with the support of the living Beatles and featuring original Beatles music, the film offers an insider perspective on the beloved band that changed the world of music.

The Lost Riots are playing a lot of shows this Fall

The Lost Riots are a punk band from Connecticut and a fine good one, we might add. Check out their fancy poster for all their upcoming shows and give them a listen here:

VIDEO: Terrible Feelings, "I Don't Even Know You"

From Vice:

Welcome to Sweden! Where the grass is green, the social system is advanced, and the punks are so gorgeous it makes you sick. When I think of Sweden, I think of Terrible Feelings, a punk band led by vocalist Manuela Iwansson with Anton Collinder (guitar) and Andy Dahlström (drums). Terrible Feeling’s 2012 LP Shadows was released on German label Sabatoge Records in Europe and Deranged Records in North America. Sonically, Shadows was poppy, driven and infectious.
After extensive tours last year with Refused and my own band (yes, that’s how I found these fools), Terrible Feelings have released a new seven-inch, Backwoods, which dropped this month. Watch the Nisse Axman-directed/edited video for the debut single, “I Don’t Even Know You," below. It’s classic, black and white basics at its best as we follow Manuela through some sunny alley that turns her into some kind of Pat Benetar-inspired runway model. Ironically, Terrible Feelings always leave me feeling really good, so... maybe the Sweeds are beautiful liars?

Quintron and Miss Pussycat are releasing a new 7", Not Good Enough, on Wacky Wacko Records (started by Seth Bogart of Hunx and his Punx) September 17th. It's going to be a limited edition run of 500 - all on pretty pink vinyl!

From Wacky Wacko:

Side A falls pretty much into Sunday Bar-B-Q slow jam territory and has been described by Quintron as, "the only song that shall ever be written about this particular thing".
Side B is an instrumental reverbed out organ version of one of the greatest melodic riffs ever put to paper....Henry Mancini's "Theme From The Pink Panther".
