South Korea's Genius release 3rd album, "Beaches"

I think this is the first post we've done on a South Korean band - and hopefully not the last! Check out Genius, whose third album, Beaches, just came out February 1 on Helicopter Records.

They tell us, "Korea is hell for rock and roll so we hope to reach an international audience."

They have an impressive resume, having played with Japandroids, This Will Destroy You, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Ra Ra Riot, No Age, The King Khan & BBQ Show, French Horn Rebellion, Jeffrey Lewis, Carsick Cars, Xiu Xiu and Retros, plus lots of others.

They list their influences as "Ralph Wiggum, pro wrestling, punk '76, Pedro the Lion, pulp comics, schlock films, cold grapes, Al Bundy, dry socks, The Walkmen, Bob's Burgers, Pavement, drunk ballads, and the young Chow Yun Fat." So, there is basically no way they could suck.

*new to us, that is.

We just got word of a documentary on Memphis's famed Antenna club that was around from 1981 - 1995. Check out the trailer here:

Follow their Facebook page to find out about local screenings. Looks like it's won a bunch of film awards...and with old footage of The Oblivians and Alex Chilton, there is no chance this isn't awesome.

Sin Destroyers - Good God EP is out NOW, to abolish your sins

Might-be-fake Christian Metal band Sin Destroyers just released a new EP, Good God, on Bandcamp.

From their bandcamp:

God, having completed such kick-ass inventions as the sun, decided to construct a rock band so righteous, the forked tail of Satan would slither betwixt his hooves. After much toil, he assembled a quintet most holy…the Sin Destroyers were thusly thrust upon this Earth.

Since 2005, the Sin Destroyers have rocked his light upon ye. God has been for all eternity. Sin Destroyers will be forever.

Dex Romweber Duo to release new album, tour with REVEREND PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND

From Bloodshot Records:

Dex Romweber Duo (https://www.bloodshotrecords.com/artist/dex-romweber-duo) is releasing a new album Images 13 on March 18 via Bloodshot Records (pre-order available here). This is the band’s third release on the label, and first following 2011’s critically acclaimed Is That You In The Blue?

PopMatters.com announced the album’s release date and details, and are currently premiering the lead track, Roll On.

For a quarter century, Dex Romweber has trolled the dark corners and back shelves of the haunted thrift store of Americana ephemera and honed an extraordinarily idiomatic sound, a particular and readily identifiable DEXness for those in the know. It’s a creepy doll collection of surf, proto-rockabilly, garage, dark and vengeful blues, and nobody, but nobody, plays it like Dex. First with the legendary Flat Duo Jets and now with his Duo, Dex distilled the punk ethos of less-is-more to the essential guitar/drums template. Left in the wake of his lecherous and slithery Silvertone were early acolytes like Jack White, Neko Case, and the Reigning Sound as well as a current crop of the indie pack like Ty Segall, No Age, Japandroids, and The Black Keys. All owe an unclaimed pawn ticket of debt to his sublime and spine-tingling sound. He is a live wire back to the murky, sometimes dangerous and always unpredictable headwaters of real rock and roll.

Dex, with his whip-wristed sister Sara Romweber on drums, takes Images 13 through neon-lit alleys, full of pulp fiction juvey rock, sci-fi theme songs and greasy denim hipster jive. Recorded at Rick Miller’s (Southern Culture on the Skids) Kudzu Ranch studio in North Carolina, Images 13 would make everyone from Duane Eddy to Stan Kenton to Lenny Bruce crack a smile, a joke or the seal on a fifth of rye and head for the Naugahyde ice bucket.

Dex Romweber Duo have also just announced a run of tour dates with Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band and Dom Flemons of Carolina Chocolate Drops:

Fri March 14 – Chicago, IL – Reggie’s Rock Club ~
Sat March 15 – Ferndale, MI – Magic Bag Theatre ~

The Ballantynes to tour the West Coast in March

From La-Ti-Da Records:

A busy year at home brought The Ballantynes into the daylight at Squamish Live! and Rifflandia, and found them opening for garage greats like the Oblivians and Roky Erickson, but on the cusp of Spring with their latest LA-TI-DA Records release making its rounds, Vancouver's soul-drenched seven piece find themselves itching to tour on their new "Liquor Store Gun Store Pawn Shop Church" EP. The appropriately numbered, 13 date tour winds its way along the West Coast March 14th - 29th, kicking off in Olympia, WA with dates down to Long Beach, before creeping back on up for a finale in Seattle. With wanderlust, homes away from home, and warmer weather lighting up their eyes, the septet are eager to revisit the sites and the company that dot their album covers and echo through their songs respectively. Catch them Saturday March 1st with The Shivas and Calvin Love at Electric Owl Social Club with Jonathan Toubin's SOUL CLAP DANCE OFF! OCP Favorite NEW COKE to release new 7'' on Black Gladiator/Slovenly February 11th

From Black Gladiator/Slovenly:

We’ve waited two years since the debut single from W. Palm Beach, FL’s NEW COKE, and now Black Gladiator is psyched as hell to present to you their much anticipated follow up, the “Duct Tape Your Mouth” EP. What we have here is seven stiff black inches of terribly dark and uncomfortable lyrics, firmly planted on top of the catchiest tunes this side of Greg Oblivian’s Reigning Sound. Singer Danny Morales’ bizarre delivery twists and grinds over the relentless r&b fueled backbeat of the title track as well as “I’m Not A Fan of Your Romance (Asshole)”, and the beauty almost surpasses the threat in the closer “I Am Drunk, I Have A Gun, I Want names,” but don’t let the gorgeous melody fool you… NEW COKE is hiding out in the bushes waiting for you, and they’re packin’.

Preview 2 tracks here:

Italy's Sultan Bathery to release first album on Slovenly Februay 25th

From Slovenly:

Slovenly Recordings is proud to present the debut full-length LP from Italian freakbeat swamis SULTAN BATHERY! A swirling, exotic blend of smoky, reverb soaked psychedelic garage-pop handcrafted in a fur-lined diamond mine, this self-titled album explosively expounds upon the complex yet catchy dynamics of their 2012 “Fireworx” EP. Euphoric waves of stomping subterranean rock’n’roll throb through your being on “Satellite,” and stinging fuzz lines cut through the pulsating fringe of your bubbly fudge mynd on “Flowers of Evil” and “Dead Leaves.” This is the raging, hyper-electric trip previously only available in ten strips and micro-dots, finally and fully realized on a hallucinatory bud of dark wax.

The Bremen Riot: Awesome.

When we got this LP in the mail, we thought it was gonna be all kindsa punk. They have a German city in their name and also the word 'riot'. And in the cover shot, the singer looks like he might possibly be about to jump into the audience and kick someone's teeth in. Just maybe.

But it turns out this is really awesome, 90s style poppy rock in roll. It reminds us of the Meat Puppets. Remember their song "Backwater"? Like that. We love this album.

The singer might still be into kicking people's teeth in, I have no idea. I guess that could be a cool stage move, as long as it's not my teeth.

Go check out Bremen Riot on Facebook and on Bandcamp and go buy their album.
