From Faster And Louder:

Lakewood, Ohio's Kill The Hippies have been a force in the underground punk world since the early/mid '90s. It's absolutely criminal that this band, for whatever reason, has never really gotten much recognition or acclaim outside of the state of Ohio. Matt Greenfield from Rust Belt Hammer recently wrote that Kill The Hippies "were never really one of the bands that was picked up by trendy labels or written about in the 'cool' kid magazines/blogs". He speaks the truth! And it's a perplexing truth given how much incredible music this band has produced over the years. After witnessing KTH live, Shawn Abnoxious called them "the best punk band to ever breathe air". And not once since has he retracted that statement! While KTH have had numerous releases on tape, 7", and CD since forming in 1993, their brand new LP You Will Live With Us Forever is their very first album on vinyl. So here they are, over two decades into their existence, with perhaps their best release to date. And you can listen to it on a turntable!

You Will Live With Us Forever is the sort of thing you just don't hear enough these days - a non-denominational kick-in-the-ass punk rock record. While it's not quite accurate to say that Kill The Hippies have "outgrown" their spazzy Killed By Death stylings of yore, their sound shows more diversity than ever on this new long player. They tackle everything from ripping early '80s style hardcore punk to classic Cleveland/Akron new wave to pure snotty punk to bizarre, completely uncategorizable type stuff. And all of it works. You could probably play this album for your friends and make them believe it was released on SST Records in 1984! The way Monte and P.P. play off of each other on guitar and bass makes this record so much fun to listen to, and all that genre-jumping is pulled off with tremendous enthusiasm and creativity. I love the way this band has evolved and honed its chops over the years without losing its, uh, "punkness" (yeah, I know that's not really a word!). You Will Live With Us Forever does not attempt to supplant 2001's brilliant Spasms In The New Age. Instead, it's more of a logical next step - continuing the lyrical sarcasm and fierce intelligence that Kill The Hippies are known for while also expanding the breadth of the band's musical repertoire. As is often the case when bands wait many years between albums, the quality of the material is extraordinary. Every time I think I've heard the "best" song, the very next track makes me question my decision. Some of the more straight-ahead punk tracks like "Die In The Past" and "Volcano" are instant hits, but as always KTH seem to especially thrive when they think outside the box. "Fernando" suggests a female-fronted Devo, while "Entrails" is spastic and bizarre in only the best ways. If Gang of Four had been from Ohio and/or completely lost theirs minds, they might have produced a song like "Dance Control".

With vinyl "product" now available, perhaps now is finally the time for the punk world at large to get hip to Kill The Hippies. You Will Live With Us Forever is a truly great LP and an early contender for album of the year. At a time when so many bands categorize themselves as post-punk or garage or hardcore or whatever, Kill The Hippies are all of those things and none of them at once. You can listen to this album and imagine that they could have toured with the Big Boys and Minutemen 30 years ago. Yet Kill The Hippies sound uniquely modern, uniquely Ohio, and uniquely themselves. Thank goodness that that old mentality of "Let's break up before we actually learn how to play!" no longer prevails in punk music. Kill The Hippies, like a lot of bands, are aging like fine wine. And the world is better for it.

Here come The Gruesomes!

From Montreal Underground:

Here is a 10 minute documentary on The Gruesomes based on an interview we did with them for Montreal Underground. Having no access to original archival footage, the doc is made up of low quality videos and pictures we scavenged (?) on the web. However, besides the pixel party and low quality sound of some of the clips, Mel and I felt that we owed The Gruesomes this document. Featuring music from The Gruesomes, American Devices, Deja Voodoo, Terminal Sunglasses and The Haunted.

Press release:

Created three years ago by Roy Vucino, Red Mass has more than 100 participating artists and musicians in its ranks. This Montreal rock band touches on a wide array of mediums from animation, illustration, improvisation, art films to music and is intent to pursue the ideals of free thinking, chaos magic and liberation through art.
The Mass has a unique approach that features lo-fi recordings mingling with highly produced tracks, and has allowed it to work with a barrage of guest musicians from all over the world including Mike Watt, Mac DeMarco, Rick Froberg, King Khan, John Kastner, Evan Dando and members of K-Holes, Duchess Says, Godspeedyoublackemperor, Human Eye, Priestess & Fly Pan Am among others.
Collaborations that could have only have taken place in this contemporary setting for sharing and creating art. The Mass is joined by friends, family and some of its biggest influences.

Vucino has been a staple in the city’s garage rock and experimental scenes for the last decade and has since begun a commercial career, recording and writing tracks for film and television. Working in the film industry has allowed Vucino to lead Red Mass through the widest range of musical genres. There are dark and unsettling tones to the music, yet the songs remain catchy and familiar.

An innovative rock n roll guitarist featured on SUB POP, Warner Bros., Last Gang Records, Swami, Alien8 and In the Red Records, Vucino has written tracks performed by Duchess Says and King Khan, amongst others, and this is not to forget his own 100+ releases. It's psychedelic music with elements of rock n roll, metal, pop, noise, folk, punk and electronic music and is a culmination of 12 years of hard work.  The Mass has opened itself to all - it can offer young artists and outsiders alike a new haven.
Red Mass has amassed more than 25 releases on independent labels most of which are now out of print. Its rotating line-up allows them to tour extensively.

Press release:

The Jim Jones Revue return to the US/Canada this Saturday, after a triumphant two week tour of the North East in January, which included a sold out New Year's Eve performance at Bowery Electric. The West Coast dates begin April 21st in Vancouver and to coincide with this, the band released the (previously unavailable in the US/ Canada) single, 'Collision Boogie' (b/w another new track, 'Mind Field'), on April 8th, available through ITunes from Punk Rock Blues Records.

The song continues the journey of sonic exploration that The JJR embarked on on their critically acclaimed album 'The Savage Heart'; this time starting in Jamaica and ending up in New Orleans……Jim Jones explains: "Collision Boogie is a sort of personal user's guide to some of the things that you might come crashing into in life. It was originally inspired from hearing a Jamaican dancehall track blaring out of a car in East London; but by the time we had an arrangement together, it ended up with more of a New Orleans flavor."

Watch the video for 'Collision Boogie' here:

Both tracks were produced and mixed by Jim Sclavunos (Grinderman/Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), recorded at The Chapel in Lincolnshire and mixed at Edwyn Collins’s West Heath Yard Studios in London. The video was directed by the late Roger Pomphrey, ('Who The Fuck is Pete Doherty?'), and shot on location in London, the video revolves around a 'New Orleans Voodoo Dancehall' party the band threw, with a cast made up of various friends, associates and accomplices in an East-meets-West London showdown.
Notorious for their frenzied, no-holds-barred, high-energy shows, the Jim Jones Revue are regarded as one of the best live acts on the planet.

Reigning Sound's new LP "Shattered" due out July 15 on Merge Records + US tour dates

Reigning Sound fans, rejoice!* Their new LP, Shattered, is due out July 15 on Merge Records.

From Merge Records:
The band’s principal songwriter/member is Greg Cartwright, who’s been leading the shifting cast of characters since 2001. You may be familiar with some of the band’s work, as this album is preceded by five studio efforts as well as numerous EPs and live records. Or perhaps some of Greg’s other projects have been on your musical radar: The ObliviansParting GiftsCompulsive Gamblers68 ComebackDeadly SnakesDetroit Cobras.

Regardless, as far as Reigning Sound is concerned, this is as good a place to start as any because through many line-up changes and mood swings, the central, constant feature is the way Greg writes songs. This particular embodiment of the band includes longtime keyboardist Dave Amels, who joined the band seven years ago when Reigning Sound recorded an album, consisting mostly of Cartwright’s songs, with former Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss.

Dave proved to be key in putting together the current line-up as well. About three years ago, Greg was asked to make a promotional EP for Scion. Recordings were set to take place in Nashville where he had lined up two local friends to round out the band, but as fate would have it, both had to bow out at the last minute. Luckily, Mike CataneseBenny Trokan, and Mikey Post—Dave Amels’ bandmates in Brooklyn soul group The Jay Vons—were up for the task. The four flew to Nashville, learned the songs, and recorded them with Greg in a couple of days. Thus was born the group that you hear on Shattered. They’ve been touring and playing together ever since, and Shattered proves that the musical union is both exciting and consistent for fans of Cartwright’s songwriting.

The album was recorded at Daptone’s Brooklyn studio (where drummer Mikey works in the office) and masterfully engineered by Wayne Gordon. The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and something in between. There are only 11 songs on the album, but the band reckons it’s just right.

Catch Reigning Sound at Merge 25 (tickets still available for their Thursday performance), or at one of their shows in May and July. Shattered will be released on July 15 and can be pre-ordered now in the Merge store.

Michael Lynch releases new 7"

Michael Lynch, one of the best musicians and coolest people we've ever had the pleasure to meet, released his new 7" today featuring two awesome 60s inspired tunes, "She's On Her Way" b/w "This Girl". Michael plays in a couple great New York bands, including Palmyra Delran's band and The Split Signals, and his solo songs are some of our absolute favorites.

Here's a description by label founder Paul Messis, from :

"The A-side 'She's On Her Way' is an early Beatles styled melodic pop tune, superbly catchy and real short clocking in at just over 1 minute 50 seconds. Lynch soars through chord progressions whilst the song ebbs and flows with rich sounding drum fills and neat vocal harmonies sung over even neater vocal melodies... this is one which could've come straight outta the Brill Building in 1965. The song also hints towards Sunshine Pop groups such as The Yellow Balloon and The Ohio Express. Fans of that kinda 60s pop can't fail with this.

The B-side This Girl' is a fantastic song, written in a moody jangle pop style. The song is the perfect three minute pop song, a universal theme which we can all relate with sung with great emotion from Michael. 'This Girl,' like the top-side, is complimented by great musicianship and harmonies, a fantastic song making this a great pop two-sider."

Buy the limited edition vinyl HERE for a measly $5! And check out Michael's other awesome releases HERE.

Columbus Ohio's "The Girls!" release their debut album April 18th

The Girls!, out of Columbus, Ohio, will be releasing their debut LP, Let's Not Be Friends, April 18th. It will be available on iTunes and Google Music, and a limited pressing of red vinyl will be available at record stores that don't suck.

Says The Girls!:
The Girls! are a midwest power pop band influenced by Paul Collins, Blondie, The Exploding Hearts, and 60s girl groups. We write melodic songs about ex-boyfriends and drinking. We like hanging out at Ryan's house where we drink cheap beer, prevent Ryan's cats from escaping, sit on the couch, drink whiskey, play 80s metal riffs, take smoke breaks, and also sometimes actually practice.

They'll be playing at Columbus's Ace of Cups on April 18th to celebrate the launch.

Check them out here, playing a live track in the studio:

Slovenly new releases: Stalins of Sound & Hobocop

From Slovenly press release:

Now more than ever, with radio stations being inundated with too-earnest faux buskers, it seems that a lot of bands could really benefit from spending some quality time with Big Black's Songs About Fucking. Judging by this record by STALINS OF SOUND, who wrap their noise punk in pseudo-Communist propaganda, the band's done its homework. “Tank Tracks” finds the trio using a few tricks in the Albini playbook, namely loading a hefty wall of fuzz against a drum-machine backdrop, and the Stalins’ abrasive machinepunk contains its share of hooks, and even some downright pretty melodies. This is all relative, of course, but after the militant march of "Blood Sex," the group carries the song out on an oddly serene and dreamy coda. The tremolo-picked riffs of "El Cajon Beatdown" are just this side of a Norwegian black-metal demo, and "Monkeys Attack" might be the best song that Devo never wrote. It's not that hard to make a chaotic noise-punk record sound good, but STALINS OF SOUND have a knack for songwriting that puts theirs on another level. —Jeff Terich /

From Slovenly press release:

HOBOCOP is the bastard love child of an alleged member of Shannon and the Clams (Jumbo Jack Flash) and the reclusive Long John Hobocop. “Half Man Half Cop” is their vinyl debut. It's ideal for addicts of slop, fuzz, weirdness and fungus. Like the SCREAMERS ‘78 demos blasted through a moldy boombox in a California flophouse, this splattering of sweet golden punk oldies is the perfect slice of slime for Slovenly to continue with our infrequently released large-hole 10” series.
